What is Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam

The Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam is a prestigious officer entry exam conducted by UPSC twice a year for recruitment into the IMA, INA, AFA and Officers Training Academy (OTA). It is a national-level competitive exam for graduates who wish to join the armed forces as commissioned officers. Applications open in December and May, with exams in April and September. Eligibility

Officer posts in the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force are open to unmarried graduates through the UPSC CDS exam. Any graduate student meeting age and qualification criteria can apply. What is the CDS exam selection process?

  • Candidates must first qualify the UPSC CDS written exam.
  • Those who clear the written exam appear for the SSB interview, which assesses intelligence, personal and leadership qualities.
  • Shortlisted candidates undergo a medical examination as per defence standards.
  • Final selection and academy allotment (IMA, INA, AFA, OTA) are based on merit and candidate preference.
  • NCC ‘C’ certificate holders with a minimum ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade are exempted from the CDS written exam for OTA entry and can proceed directly to the SSB interview.

About the Program

CDSE Coaching at LMFDA Dehradun is typically a 6-month program, designed for college students and graduates who aspire to join the Indian Armed Forces as Commissioned Officers. Aspirants can start CDS exam preparation during their undergraduate studies or after graduation, as eligibility extends up to age 24-25, depending on the academy (IMA, INA, AFA or OTA).

LMFDA offers both 6-month and 1-year unlimited coaching programs. Students enrolled in the unlimited plan can continue with coaching, revision, doubt sessions and test series until they clear the UPSC CDS exam.

Classes are held Monday to Friday, with mock tests on Saturdays. The final 45 days before the exam are dedicated entirely to full-length test series and intensive revision, ensuring students are fully prepared for both the written exam and SSB Interview.
